Westwood High School campus is silent today following a massive fire last night that destroyed the kitchen and several dining rooms at the campus Stewart Town, Trelawny Tuesday night.
The fire started just before 10 p.m. Tuesday but did not spread to the main administrative building that holds a dorm for some of the boarding students. Staff at the facility told the North Coast Times that fire fighters responded promptly with four units from Falmouth and Brown’s Town fighting the blaze and containing it. The dorms were not affected.
Standing outside the main dorm across the road from the campus the fire hit, principal of the elite all girls school, Karen Francis told reporters this morning (Wednesday) that classes were suspended today and all boarders will be sent home. Day students are asked not to attend this week.
By next week, students are expected back at school, with arrangements to be made for boarders to have meals at the Karl Fuller dorm across at ‘Woodlands’.
Ms Francis told the North Coast Times the girls responded well by evacuating the building near to the kitchen and dining rooms and none was injured. Westwood has more than 770 students on roll and is celebrating 135 years of existence.
