The Epworth Primary Lit-O-Plosion reading competition was held at the Epworth Methodist Church, right next to the Epworth Primary School, St Ann, on Thursday, May 29, 2014. The reading competition comprised four different categories including spell off, newscasters read off, Comprehension: Questioning and Oral Comprehension and review. Students competing at the Lit-o-Plosion reading competition were placed into three different houses for the purpose of the competition. Betton, Melville and Roxburgh. In the spelling competition, there were six participants, with two dropping out early. As the competition progressed and numerous words were given to the students, they were still on the top of their form and managed to complete spelling all the words. The spell masters were forced to get hold of different level words but the spellers were still able to overcome the new set of words.
After digging deeper and deeper the spell masters were forced to use some words from the dictionary that challenged the spellers. After a long hard battle the students were asked to spell Kudos. Three spellers attempted the word and failed but it was Jamoy James who came out victorious. He was followed by Sandena Tait and there was a tie between Sashoy Braham-Mel and Raheen Salmon. The winning house for the Epworth Primary Lit-O-Plosion reading competition was Melville followed by Roxburgh and Betton. Judges at the competition were Valma Jones, Jacqueline Parkin and Christall Byfield. “We at the Epworth Primary would like to express thanks to our sponsors: Achiever’s, Bryan’s Bookstore, Carlong Publishers, Dr Horace Betton, Milton Forbes, Mr Nation and Jamaica Cultural Development Commission,”
