ST MARY NATIVE HAILED AS SPORTS SPECIALIST, ADMINISTRATOR

Leading members of the sporting and education fraternities turned up at Swallowfield Chapel, St Andrew Thursday, April 10, 2025, to pay their last respects to retired educator and sports administrator Edwin George Murray.
He was remembered at the thanksgiving service as a humble man who promoted sports and aided in the development of the character and talent of many sporting personalities.
Murray died on March 23, 2025. He was 77.
His body was interred in Islington, St Mary, where he was born.

Murray attended St Mary High School, and Mico College before commencing his teaching career at Clarendon College.
He studied Sports Administration in the United Kingdom where he earned his first degree.
When he returned to Jamaica, Murray taught at St Andrew Technical High School, where he was credited with building a strong sports programme.

From there he went to GC Foster College as Vice Principal, where he served until his retirement.
He was passionate about sports and had knowledge of several disciplines including football, volleyball, and track and field. He served as an administrator or official in many sports including as football referee and athletics meet director.
Among those attending was a large contingent from GC Foster College including Principal Maurice Wilson, senior lecturers, members of the present and staff, and six retired lecturers who worked with him –Monica Sang-Binns, Linda Williamson, Thelma Samuels, Stoney James, Marline Cunningham and Patricia Mullings.
A mixed group of workers sang Mr. Murray’s favourite song.
Among those paying tribute were JFF President Michael Ricketts and Garth Gayle of the JAAA.
Murray’s son Kevin remembered him as a father who took care of him and his four siblings and many other children taken into their home. Edwin is survived by wife Joyce.
