The Life in the Word Ministries church, located in Ocho Rios, St Ann held a massive back-to-school treat for approximately 150 children, at the Life in the Word Basic School, Shaw Park Heights, Ocho Rios, St Ann on Saturday, August 30.
The treat was organized by ‘Promise Ring’ a youth group within Life in the Word Ministries and headed by, Marissa Thompson. The treat was not only for those of the church but for as many children of the Shaw Park community, ages three to 15 years old.
When the Times spoke with Marissa, she explained that the funding was raised from the church and several individuals within it. She also said that a tremendous amount of funds was donated from the host pastor of the church, Bishop Bryan Ffrench. All the money that was accumulated went towards the purchasing of, books, pencils, bags, rulers, pens and other stationery items. This was the first back-to-school treat hosted by ‘Promise Ring’. The director Ms. Thompson had plans for future back-to-school treats and also Christmas treats for this year.
The day was lit with the faces of happy and delighted children as they enjoyed the last of the summer holidays. They had fun in dancing, playing games, and just socializing. ‘Promise Ring’ also threw in a bounce-a-bout for the little ones to enjoy. Medical tests were also conducted for the children to ensure that were healthy to be back in school, if not they were would receive the necessary treatment or recommendation. The medical was done by Dr. Grace Robison. She did a great job in treating the little ones and making sure they were comfortable during the process. Also present during the medical was nurse, Joyce Gayle. Bishop Bryan Ffrench had some fun moments with the children as he indulged them in dancing activities. The Times spoke with one grand-parent, Cynthia Gowie, she said “I think it’s a really good deed the church organized for these kids. It will help us greatly as not all of us can find the money to buy sufficient school supplies to send our children back to school.”
Hairstyles were also being done for girls in fitting them to head back-to-school in fine style. As the children got a bit tired, they were served a warm meal along with popcorn, juices and delicacies.
The organizers were pleased with the turnout for the treat.
