The man who was arrested and charged for the murder of a two-year-old and the wounding of an adult in Lewis District, St Ann, made his first appearance in the St Ann’s Bay Resident Magistrate court on Friday, August 29.

He is 42-year-old Devon Jarrett of Lewis District, near Priory, St Ann. Jarrett is charged for the murder of two-year-old Jaheim Cooper, otherwise called Jay and the wounding of another man in Lewis District on Thursday, August 21.

When the accused appeared in court on Friday, a psychiatric evaluation was ordered. Jarrett does not have legal representation. He was further remanded until Friday, September 12 when the case will again be mentioned.

Reports are that on Thursday, August 21, Jarrett and a man were reportedly involved in an altercation. It is alleged that during the dispute, Jarrett used a knife to cut the man’s throat. He ran and residents chased him. It is alleged that during the chase, Jarrett ran into a yard where two little boys were playing. Jarrett allegedly grabbed Jaheim and cut his throat. The toddler was rushed to hospital where he died.

Residents who apprehended Jarrett and beat him, claimed he was mentally ill. However, the family of the toddler, dispute those claims, saying he was well known to them. The court ordered that a psychiatric evaluation be done to be presented to the court on his next court appearance.
