Councillors and officers of the St Ann Municipal Corporation (SAMC) observed a minute of silence in honour of the life of Detective Sergeant Lloyd Kelly who died last weekend.
The 53-year-old policeman was found unresponsive in his BMW car that was parked along the Exchange Main Road in Ocho Rios, St Ann. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at St Ann Bay Hospital.
Det Sgt Kelly who recently returned to the parish, and was placed at Runaway Bay police, was said to have had a heart problem.
He came to national attention about ten years ago in the controversial fatal shooting of a man who was said to have had mental health issues.
In raising the matter at the Council meeting Thursday, January 14, Councillor Ian Bell noted that the SAMC had, in December observed a minute’s silence for the life of a firefighter.
He said Sgt Kelly was a good crime fighter and was feared by many.
Others rising to express their appreciation of Sgt Kelly included Councillor Genevor Gordon-Bailey and Ian Isaacs. All councillors and officers rose to observe a minute’s silence as an expression of support for the life of the cop.
