COP HOSPITALISED AFTER DRAMATIC PT MARIA INCIDENT

Driver Reportedly Dragged Policeman Pinned To His Car

Two policemen were injured, one of whom was hospitalized, and a taxi operator shot and wounded by police in a dramatic incident in Port Maria, St Mary, Friday, September 1.

The CCU had not, up to Saturday morning released a report on the incident.

However, reports to the North Coast Times say police, Transport Authority inspectors and a Justice of the Peace were on Traffic Enforcement duties in Port Maria just before noon.

It is reported that a grey Toyota Axio motor car, with private license plates, drove recklessly into the parking lot of the Giant Plaza.

One officer approached the vehicle and signalled the driver to stop. The officer was hit by the vehicle and fell to the ground.

Another officer who signalled the driver to stop was reportedly held by his left arm and pinned to the car as it kept moving out onto Stennett Street.

The policeman, a district constable, reportedly started crying out for help and shouting to the driver to let go of his arm. The driver continued heading towards Frontier whilst the policeman tried to keep up with it the car.

The driver reportedly began swerving into oncoming traffic, purportedly in a bid to cause the policeman to be hit by oncoming vehicles. The policeman pulled his service revolver and shot the driver in the upper arm. The driver subsequently released the arm of the policeman who fell to the ground.

He hit his head and received bruises to his face and body. The policeman was taken in an unconscious state to the nearby Port Maria Hospital, where he was admitted.

The police reports say the driver was identified after he turned up for treatment at Port Maria Hospital.

The incident and the police investigation led to a massive build-up of traffic around the small town.

The matter has been reported to INDECOM.
