A 53-year-old policeman who was linked to a controversial shooting 10 years ago has been found dead in Ocho Rios, St Ann.
He is Detective Sergeant Lloyd Kelly, stationed at Runaway Bay in the parish.
Det Sgt Kelly was found unresponsive in his BMW motorcar that had been parked along the Exchange main road, Ocho Rios. The attention of passers-by was drawn to the car with its hazard lights on. On investigating, they found Mr. Kelly’s stretched backward in the driver’s seat.
Police rushed to the scene and CPR was administered, but the officer was unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Mr. Kelly who had a reputation as a fearless crime fighter was involved years ago in a shooting in Buckfield, Ocho Rios.
It is reported that Kelly had a heart problem and was being treated for it.
A colleague of his said that even though he was known to have a heart problem, Det Sgt Kelly had been transferred d to different parishes in recent times, returning only last year, from Trelawny to his home in St Ann.
Another colleague said Kelly remained a tireless crime fighter, even though not been in the best of health in recent months.
It was widely reported in 2012 that he shot dead a man who was mentally challenged. The man was on the ground after being attacked by people who claimed he had killed a woman.
Witnesses said the man had a knife and had attacked Kelly. Video footage emerged showing the man being shot and killed. The video led to outrage across the island.
The case brought against Mr Kelly was dismissed after the witness who shot the incriminating video failed to come forward.
