ATTACKER SHOT DEAD IN ST ANN
OCHO RIOS, St Ann — June 6, 2024
The policeman who was chopped by a man in St Ann, on Thursday, June 6, 2024, is in serious but stable condition in hospital.
The attacker was shot dead in an encounter with the police.
Dead is Herbert Hines, 51 years old, of Hyattsfield, St Ann.
The policeman who was rushed to hospital and admitted has been identified as Constable Curtis White, assigned to the Ocho Rios police station.
According to police reports, Constable White was driving a service vehicle with a colleague and went to the community of Hyattsfield in response to a report that a man was breaching a restraining order.
The accused man on seeing the police ran from the house where he ought not to have been. Hines ran into bushes.
The police went in search of Hines who approached Cons. White with a machete in hand. He was warned to drop the machete after which he attacked Cons. White and chopped him several times.
Cons. White managed to fire shots from his pistol and the man was hit.
Constable White was rushed to the hospital, with chop wounds to his head and other sections of his body.
Hines was also transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Several senior police officers led by Senior Superintendent Dwight Powell, in charge of St Ann police rushed to the hospital and provided support for Constable White.
SSP Powell confirmed to North Coast Times Thursday evening that Constable White was in serious but stable condition. He expressed regret at the incident.
