CONGESTED PORT MARIA

Vendors continue to occupy the sidewalks and street corners of Port Maria, St Mary’s capital,  although a $60-million market has been constructed to help bring order to the town.

The market has been completed for nearly two years but vendors continue to shy away from it although it has all the necessary modern facilities.

The narrow sidewalk along Stennett Street and in front of large establishments such as Courts,  commercial banks, and the parking areas of Giant Supermarket and other retail outlets are overrun by vendors.

This forces people to walk out into the roadways to get by provisions laid out on the ground or on stalls and carts.

In addition, because taxis and buses use store fronts and the roadside for parking, the congestion is almost chronic.
