Claim that Pimento Walk youth ‘phoned’ and seen in car of man now charged for his murder

Prosecutors are claiming that the youth shot dead in Pimento Walk, Ocho Rios, was in the car of a man held for his murder. They are also claiming that Orane Gaynor had made calls, before he was last seen, to Clayton Smith now charged for his murder.

Smith again had his case again set for mention when he appeared before senior resident magistrate Andrea Thomas on Tuesday, April 19.

Clayton Smith is the man charged in relation to the murder of 20-year-old Orane Gaynor of Pimento Walk, St. Ann, whose body was found, with multiple gunshot wounds, in a ravine in the community, on Saturday, March 5.

When Smith appeared before the St. Ann’s Bay Resident Magistrate Court on Tuesday morning, the clerk of court explained to RM Thomas that there were several outstanding documents on the case file.

These included a statement from the person who identified the body, the scene of crime report, post mortem report, forensic certificate and the communication forensic and cybercrime unit (CFCU) report.

The clerk of court explained to RM Thomas that in this case, a CFCU report was necessary, because the deceased, Gaynor was at a bar in Pimento Walk and it is alleged that he used the bartender’s phone to make a phone call to the accused, Smith.

Smith then drove up and he and Gaynor were seen in conversation that night. Gaynor later got into his car and Smith drove off.

It is further alleged that gunshots were later heard coming from a section of the Pimento Walk community. Gaynor’s body was found days later in a gully with gunshot wounds.

The cell phone was taken to ascertain what would have been the nature of the phone calls. In addition, Smith’s car was seized for forensics to be done to find whether there were any traces of blood.

However, Smith’s attorney, Oswest Senior Smith explained that the very bartender, whose phone is alleged to have been taken for a CFCU report to be done, in a statement said that she did not lend Gaynor any phone that night to make any calls.

That allegation was being made by two other eye witnesses.

Further, Mr Senior Smith argued that the accused man’s car was taken from “March 17 or thereabout”, and the man needed his car.

The investigating officer was absent from the court proceedings and no updates was possible on the case.  A warrant was ordered for him by RM Thomas.

Smith will return to the courts on June 7. His bail was extended.

Allegations are that at about 9:30 a.m. on March 5, the body of Orane Gaynor of Pimento Walk, was found in a ravine in the community with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body.

Reports indicate that Gaynor was shot from as far as the Thursday night of that week and his body thrown into a 70ft ravine. It was found after his family members started searching for him and someone discovered a foot of his slipper along a dirt path.

Gaynor’s murder was the second in that community since the start of this year. On January 5, another youth, twenty-year-old Mario Hall was shot dead at his home in Pimento Walk.

Police, who had stepped up activities in the area, held Smith in one of their operations.IMG-20160319-WA0031
