Circuit court backs up as jurors sent home

justiceMore than 21 jurors were sent home from the St Ann Circuit Court Wednesday, until next Monday, as several cases were not ready for trial.

The jurors had made themselves available to serve during the four-week sitting of the St Ann Circuit Court that commenced Monday, May 15. However they were sent home as witnesses and defense attorneys were not available in several cases.

That was further indication that the Circuit session will fail to deal with most of the cases before the court.

One hundred and forty (140) cases are before the court, it was revealed at Monday’s opening, in St Ann’s Bay.

“There is no way on earth that a judge can dispose of 140 cases in four weeks,” Justice Glen Brown remarked on Monday.

He was also critical of the infrastructure at the nations’ court such as in St Ann. He also said the wheels of justice cannot turn when 140 cases are on the list without the proper resources available.

Mr Justice Brown sent the jurors home Wednesday, May 17, to return to court on Monday, May 22. Witnesses and defense attorneys were unavailable for several matters the jurors should hear.

“If witnesses don’t come, I cannot start any matter,” the judge told the jurors, as he apologized to them on behalf of the court
