CHARGED WITH KILLING STEPDAD, GRANTED BAIL • Court told tensions high in community, accused must stay in another parish

A man, who is alleged to have stabbed his stepfather to death last month, has been granted bail.

The man, Donovan Henry, was granted bail in the sum of $300,000 by senior parish judge Yvette Wentworth-Miller on Thursday, August 10.

Henry was charged with the stabbing to death of 41-year-old Delroy Nicholson, a mason/construction worker of Boscobel View, St Mary.

Nicholson was said to have been stabbed several times during a dispute on Thursday night, July 27 in his yard. He was killed in what many have theorized was a family dispute that turned to tragedy.

When the case was brought before the court last Thursday, the prosecutor indicated that the matter was for Henry to settle his legal representation and for file completion.

The prosecutor indicated that the crown was not objecting to bail, however, she was asking that the accused man be relocated as tensions are high in the community, where the murder took place.

The bail application was held “in-camera,” meaning that members of the public were not allowed in the courtroom at that time.

However, it was heard that Henry was granted bail in the sum of $300,000 with one to six sureties and he is to reside in another parish.

He will return to court on October 26, when the case will again be mentioned.

Among the files outstanding in the case is the post-mortem report.

The Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) of the JCF reported that Nicholson and Henry were involved in a dispute at about 11:30 p.m. when both men used knives to inflict wounds on each other.

The police were summoned and Nicholson and Henry were taken to the hospital. Nicholson was pronounced dead, while Henry was treated and released into police custody, the CCU report stated.

In a story carried by the North Coast Times, it was reported that the tragic events could be traced back to a shop, where Nicholson had an argument with his spouse. Some residents claimed the woman was hit. When Nicholson went home, his stepson attacked him with a “cutting implement.” He was pronounced dead at hospital.
