Charged in Runaway Bay murder

TWO HELD FOR BRUTAL RUNAWAY BAY MURDER STILL NOT CHARGED

Police have now charged one of two men who were taken into custody over two weeks ago for questioning in relation to a murder in Runaway Bay, St. Ann.

Charged for the murder of 41-year-old Dwight Asphall, is Shawn Thompson, 30 years old, of Rose Hall in Montego Bay, St. James.

Thompson was charged last week and appeared before the resident magistrates court in St. Ann’s Bay.

He was remanded into custody until this week Thursday, August 28, when the case will again be mentioned.

The second suspect remains in police custody and is to be placed on an identification parade. Reports are that both suspects re from St James.

Both men were taken into custody on the night of August 8, after they were reportedly turned over to police in Discovery Bay, allegedly by a taxi driver.

North Coast Times was told the men boarded the taxi in the Runaway Bay area. However, the driver became suspicious after he realized that the men were covered in blood. One of the men reportedly had a bloodied towel wrapped around his hand.

It’s reported that after the men were handed over to cops, who questioned them, the suspects reportedly led lawmen to Asphall’s home where his mutilated body was found inside the house. It’s reported that Asphall had more than 28 stab wounds.

Asphall had recently returned to Jamaica from the US where he had been for some three years working on the overseas work programme.

It is still not clear what led to the attack on Asphall. However, it’s reported that one of the two men visited Asphall earlier during the day on August 8. He left and returned sometime later with a male friend.

Asphall’s body was found by police about 10:30 pm that night with stab wounds.

There are reports that some  items including cash, debit card and a tablet computer were taken from the house, but robbery is not suspected to be the motive of the attack on Asphall.
