The grounds of the Discovery Bay United Church were lit with the radiant colors of pink and white on Saturday, October 4, in celebration of Cassandra Stewart’s (Aunt Cass) 100th birthday.
Family, community and church members participated in the short function to celebrate Mrs Stewart’s milestone. The beginning of the celebration comprised a few songs which ‘Aunt Cass’ loves. The master of ceremonies of the evening’s function was Elsie Bloomfield, businesswoman who welcomed everyone to the celebration.
Granddaughter of Cassandra Stewart, Judy Major- Reid spoke about her grandmother as a remarkable woman of God, one who is strong and loves to motivate others. “We are deeply grateful for all of you for doing this wonderful gesture for Cassandra, and on behalf of the family we must say thanks,” Reid said.
Pastor Carlton Senior was the emcee and he gave to the audience memories of Aunt Cass, back when she was much stronger in body and was always willing to help out in the church and in the community.
Cassandra Stewart was born on September 26, 1914. Her maiden name was Walters. She is originally from Dumbarton, St Ann. She married Charles Stewart, who was a shop keeper at Top Bay in Discovery Bay. The union produced seven (7) children four girls and three boys. One of her children, George Stewart was present at her celebration; and most of the others are said to be overseas. Aunt Cass has 80 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Mrs Stewart was a housewife but loved to cook and to take care of people and young children. She has been a loyal member of the Discovery Bay United Church for over 60 years. She was baptized at the age of 19, making her a Christian for 81 years. Mrs Stewart was described as a devoted mother and a faithful Christian. She is also the oldest member of the Discovery Bay United Church.
Although Mrs Stewart cannot walk much now, she said that still she is able to go to church and praise her God. She received a citation that was read by Cherrie Rowe.
A special prayer was said for Aunt Cass by Reverend Delroy Johnson, thanking God for the positive impact she made on the lives of each and every one within the community and her church. After the prayer Mrs Stewart had the opportunity to cut the cake with the candles ‘100’ lit. She said thanks to all who came to give the support and to make the day a memorable one.
