Case of murder of Marcus Garvey High Student comes to circuit

Another mention date was set for the man charged in the 2011 killing of a Marcus Garvey Technical High student in Runaway Bay, St Ann.

Charged for the murder of 16-year-old Vencott Miles is Marlon Reid. Reid had pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The case was set for trial in October of last year. However, it did not proceed as Reid was unrepresented at that time. It was then mentioned again in the last sitting of the St Ann Circuit court, however, the details of this are not known to The Times.

When the matter was mentioned in the St Ann Circuit Court on Wednesday May 24, the trial still did not commence.

Reid is now represented by attorney Vincent Wellesley.  The prosecution informed the court that the case was not yet ready for trial as some details are to be discussed between the crown and Mr Wellesley “before the matter is dealt with”.

Reid is to return to court on June 2.

The murder

Allegations are that at around 2 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2011 someone climbed through the window of Miles’ bedroom in Hampstead, Runaway Bay, St. Ann, and slashed his throat.

Miles reportedly stumbled into his sister’s room with his throat slashed. He was later pronounced dead at the St Ann’s Bay Hospital.

It was said that prior to the incident Miles went to his room where he lay in bed speaking to a female friend on the phone

The incident is said to have taken place just after the teen along with other relatives returned from a Church Crusade in the area.

The family had theorized that Miles’ murder was as a result of a feud between him and the accused, over a 16-year-old girl from another high school in St. Ann. Miles is believed to have had a relationship with the girl.
