CAPTURED 15 MONTHS AFTER ESCAPING CUSTODY

POLICE RAID IN GAYLE, CONTINUES STEPPED UP ANTI-CRIME ACTIVITIES

GAYLE, St Mary; March 8, 2025

St Mary police have captured a man who escaped custody at the Oracabessa police station, St Mary, nearly 15 months ago.

He is 22-year-old Nolando Atkinson who police said was from Pimento Walk, St Ann and Boscobel, St Mary. Atkinson was on a  robbery charge when he and six other men escaped from the Oracabessa lock up on the morning of December 21, 2023.7 ESCAPE FROM BOSCOBEL LOCKUP

The others were recaptured, some within days others over months. One was killed.

Reports are that Atkinson was held when a team of lawmen conducted a snap raid, in Woodpark in the Gayle police area, on Friday evening at 6:30. They were targeting individuals suspected of harbouring escapees.

During the operation, two men on a premises being raided observed the police and attempted to flee. One of the men brandished what appeared to be a firearm and fired in the direction of the officers. The police returned fire. In the exchange, one man was shot and injured, while the other escaped.

The wounded suspect was identified as Nolando Atkinson.

He was transported to the Port Maria Hospital for medical treatment.

A search of a bag recovered from Atkinson revealed: three live 9mm rounds, one cellular phone and two electronic devices, suspected to be used in the theft of motor vehicles

Investigations are ongoing as police continue to pursue the second suspect who fled the scene.

Police in St Mary have stepped up activities in the last several weeks with raids, curfews and intense investigations to tackle crime and an outbreak of violence in some communities.
