The Brown’s Town High School in St Ann celebrated their Jamaica Day on Friday, February 28, on the school grounds with the theme ‘Sporting greatness in my community’.Students and teachers were all decked out in their Jamaican colours as they enjoyed folk music oral history, proverbs, jokes and traditional cuisine and much more about Jamaica’s rich history.Councillor of Brown’s Town, Delroy Redway opened the proceedings. Several folklore items were performed after the greetings and comments were made by the principal of Brown’s Town High School, Johnallson Feraria.Students did a dramatic piece in performing the popular maypole dancing which all found amusing. Items followed included skits, dances and dub poems. The emcees of the proceedings were Felisia Broderick and Lydia Henry-Cross. They both did a fantastic job in keeping the students and teachers spruced and fully entertained.During the break period the students had the chance of viewing some of the items which Jamaican’s use to uses as far back as the 80’s. Phillipa Morris –Grey and Celcia Green gave The Times and students a little history about some of the items that were still useful in today’s society. Some of these traditional items included the wood fire grater and enamel jug. The traditional use of natural herbs such as Rosemary, Artocarpus and the leaf-of-life was spoken of.The school also had a digital display, highlighting the Jamaican athletes and the brand Jamaica, to show that the island is small but dominates the world in track and field.After the break, the activities resumed with another session filled with excitement. The competition section was now abuzz, where individual students now got the chance to demonstrate their talents on stage. Some were overcome by nerves but there were also some stellar performances by Clayton Gordon, Sanaldo Dixon, Shanelle Gayle, Diana Pitkin, Shakeedah Lee, Mackonenn West, Danielle Grey, Britanie Bailey and company and Jamaican Starlight.Principal Johnallson Feraria was pleased with the students behavior throughout the day and urged them to continue being on the right path to be great Jamaican leaders
