The Brown’s Town Community College in celebrating its 40th Anniversary under the theme “Reflecting on the past, repositioning for the future”, has incorporated a social outreach component in the celebrations.
The college said it was considered necessary to continue its outreach to the less fortunate. The college believes that community outreach is essential, not only for investment in the community and the people who live in it, but also to assist students in the promotion of their own personal growth and development. This initiative, it says, has helped to build students’ self esteem by fostering empathy while instilling the importance of voluntarism.
Built into the curriculum is a component in which each student is required to complete 40 hours of community service.
To commemorate the 40th milestone, the college celebrated with Widow’s Mite Home in Murray Mountain, St. Ann. The home is a residential care home, operated by the Mustard Seed Communities and caters to 20 abandoned children with physical and mental disabilities. Members of the college community gave items of clothing, food products, toiletries and paints for the cause.
On Friday, April 15, 2016 six students, two faculty members, three ancillary staff members and the vice principal of student services journeyed to Window’s Mite and were greeted by the warden Wendalyn Howell who gave them a tour of the premises.
The day was spent combing the children’s hair, painting the facility, reading and singing along with the children. The students had a sense of accomplishment and civic responsibility and felt a greater appreciation for people with special needs.
