BREAK-IN, VANDALISM AT HORACE CLARKE HIGH

CLASSES RESUME TUESDAY, AFTER CLEAN UP

ISLINGTON, St Mary; May 12, 2025

Classes are expected to resume at Horace Clarke High School, Islington St Mary Tuesday, May 13, following the weekend break-in and vandalism that closed the school on Monday.

The Ministry of Education says all necessary steps are being taken “to support the continuation of teaching and learning at Horace Clarke High School”.

A release from the Ministry said the break-in, Saturday, May 10, led to the ransacking of several key areas of the institution, including the tuck shop, administrative offices, staff room, and several classrooms.

“Items reported stolen include internet modems, a microwave, computer accessories, and tuck shop stock. Furniture and fixtures were also damaged, light bulbs were shattered, and important documents were displaced during the incident,” the Ministry said.

Acting Principal Milton Matthews reported the incident to the Ministry’s Region 2 Office on Sunday, May 11.

The Ministry said that although classes were suspended on Monday, May 12, all staff reported for duty and, with Ministry officials, worked to prepare for the resumption of face-to-face classes on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.

The Ministry said students scheduled to sit their Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations are being accommodated according to the official examination timetable, with full supervision in place to ensure a smooth testing process.

Minister of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Senator Dr Dana Morris Dixon, expressed her deep disappointment at the incident. She said: “ It is disheartening to know that individuals would so callously disrupt the teaching and learning environment at Horace Clarke High. Our schools must be safe spaces for students and educators.”
