The mother of baby Nevalisia Campbell, who was slain at the weekend, has been taken into custody. Also in custody is the stepfather of the child.

Supt Gary Francis, acting head of St Ann police told the North Coast Times the two were to be charged under the Child Care and protection Act, as it had been determined they acted with negligence.

“Our investigations revealed the two adults were out at a community dance and left the children alone at home,” Supt Francis said.

Initial reports made by the mother were that she had put Nevalisia and her twin brother to bed at around 10:30. on Saturday night. The little girl awoke at about 11 p.m. and asked for some water to drink. She was given the water and she lay with her mother on the bed. Nevalisia’s mother fell asleep.

She further reported that at about 1:30 a.m., Nevalisia could not be found anywhere in the house.

The mother later made a report to the Brown’s Town police at about 2 o’clock Sunday morning.

However, initial police investigations have revealed that the mother and her boyfriend were not at the house at the time Nevalisia disappeared.
