The man who is accused of raping and murdering a nine-year-old girl in St Ann has escaped police custody.

Taliyah Thompson was found dead Saturday, September 23, after she was raped, in the apartment of a neighbour who is related to her. Police said the 27-year-old suspect, a sanitation worker, was injured when he tried to kill himself with a heated bullet held by a pair of pliers.

The 27-year-old suspect who was under police guard escaped just before midnight Saturday, September 30 from the St Ann’s Bay Hospital.

He reportedly freed himself from a pair of handcuffs which had secured him to a bed. The accused man jumped through a window and escaped the hospital grounds. It is not clear where the police guard was when the man was freeing himself and leaving the ward.

A hunt is on at this moment, Sunday morning, in a neighbouring community to the hospital.

There is anger in Discovery Bay where people demonstrated last Saturday, hours after the girl’s death that the man should have been killed when he was found collapsed in someone’s yard after his attempt at suicide.
