Two years after the gruesome murder of a two-year-old boy in Lewis district, the man accused of the killing is to have his hearing in the case on December 7.
These developments occurred when the accused, Devon Jarrett of Lewis District, near Priory, St Ann, appeared before the St Ann Parish Court on Friday, September 30.
Jarrett is charged for the murder of two-year-old Jaheim Cooper, otherwise called Jay and the wounding of a man, in Lewis District on Thursday, August 21, 2014.
The crown prosecutor explained that several of the statements were regularized with the Committal Proceedings Act (CPA).
The prosecutor went on that the statements in compliance were enough for the prosecution to make out a prima facie case against Jarrett.
The files in the case are to be served on Jarrett’s attorney, Robert Brown by October 28. The hearing into the case to determine if Jarrett’s case will be transferred to the circuit court will be held on December 7.
Jarrett was further remanded until that time.
GRUESOME ATTACK
Allegations against Devon Jarrett are that on August 21, he was involved in a dispute with another man in Lewis district during which he allegedly used a knife to cut the man on his throat. Residents who became aware of the incident reportedly chased Jarrett who ran into a nearby yard. Young Jaheim was in the yard playing with another child when Jarrett allegedly grabbed Jaheim and used a knife to slash his throat. The child was pronounced dead at hospital and Jarrett arrested and charged.
Jarrett made his first court appearance, two years ago on Friday, August 29, 2014, where a psychiatric report was ordered.
When Jarrett appeared in court later, in September of 2014, he had told JudgeThomas that he was seeing ghosts and that it was people who told him to do what he did.This was after a psychiatric evaluation was done on Jarrett and presented to the court. It described him as being unfit to stand trial.
Judge Thomas requested that a further psychiatric evaluation be done on Jarrett. The matter was put off for November 18, 2014 allowing enough time for a second psychiatric evaluation to be done.
The new psychiatric evaluation report said that the accused man, Jarrett was well enough to stand trial.
