The Police High Command says that the man who escaped police custody after he allegedly raped and killed nine-year-old Taliyah Thompson of Discovery Bay had been charged.

Also, the police said a report on the circumstances of the escape should be provided to the Commissioner of Police by the end of Sunday.

Police made the announcement Sunday afternoon by way of a release.

The nine-year-old student at Discovery Bay Primary School was raped and then stabbed to death, Saturday afternoon, September 23.

Police later that same day, arrested 27-year-old Troy Ellis, the girls step uncle. He was held after reportedly trying to commit suicide, using a live round he was heating, held by a pair of pliers

Ellis escaped from the ward, where he was under police guard, Saturday night.

In the release confirming Ellis’ escape from custody at the St Ann’s Bay Hospital, the police high command said “He has been formally charged with Rape and Murder.”

That information was not previously known.

The High Command said “The circumstances of Ellis’ escape are now the subject of a major investigation by the Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau (IPROB). However it was confirmed that he was seen making his escape at approximately 10:35 p.m. on Saturday, September 30,”

The release said further that Ellis “is carrying several serious wounds inflicted to the face and sections of his upper body.”

People who know his whereabouts are asked to contact the police at 119, Crime Stop at 311 or to the NIB Tip Line at 811.

They have not said how Ellis was able to escape.
