Lisa Joins Protest Over PNP Selection Process

MP HITS OUT FOLLOWING PROTEST

A row has broken out in the People’s National Party (PNP) over the selection of a candidate to replace Lisa Hanna in the South East St Ann (SESA) Constituency in the next General Elections.

Lisa Hanna– Not pleased with process

Ms Hanna as well as many party members and delegates are expressing how upset they are with the procedure accepted by the Party to decide on the candidate.

The PNP two weeks ago conducted a poll in the constituency which showed that former cricketer Wavel Hinds was the one favoured by those polled.

According to sources, the poll results showed Dr Kenneth Russell, and Patricia Duncan Sutherland getting fewer votes than Hinds. The North Coast Times carried those results last Thursday on its Website and Facebook page.

The executive of the party has since decided to accept Hinds as the candidate for what is considered a PNP safe seat. The General Secretary of the PNP Dr Dayton Campbell has called a meeting with SESA executives to announce the decision.

But Ms Hanna, in a letter to the party, Friday April 21 said she will not attend any such meeting. She described the method used to decide the candidate as a “uniquely undemocratic, exclusionary candidate selection process.”

This followed a protest by several members and delegates in the SESA Constituency outside the PNP office in Claremont, Thursday, April 20. The protestors said many of them were delegates and had not been asked to vote. They said they would not allow the PNP central to impose any candidate on them.
