Dozens of people looted a trailer truck laden with food and household items, that overturned at the Drax Hall Roundabout at the western end of the Edward Seaga (North-South) Highway this morning (Thursday).

The truck was reportedly heading to Montego Bay when the driver lost control o the dangerous descent to the roundabout. The truck crashed through barriers and flipped over on its top.

The driver and a sideman were pinned down for some time and were released by Jamaica Fire brigade personnel. They were taken to hospital but their medical state is unknown.

Within minutes of the crash, people, some of them passing motorists others from the nearby community, swarmed the truck. Some climbed up on the siding and began pulling boxes and crates of items. They ran away to cars or to their homes taking bottles of water, juices, soap, disinfectant and other items.

The mishap led to a massive pile up of traffic coming off the highway as well as traffic going to and coming from Ocho Rios. The line of traffic coming from the Drax Hall end stretched at one time to lights at Knutsford Plaza.

The crash this morning is the latest in a series, involving heavy vehicles. The dangers of the entrance to the round-about has been repeatedly mentioned at St Ann Municipal Corporation Meeting. The National Works Agency has been written to about it but nothing has been done regarding the requested realignment.
