The Councillor for the St Ann’s Bay Division is describing the main cemetery of the parish as a ‘woodland’ and disgraceful.
Councillor Dalas Dickenson who is also deputy mayor for St Ann’s Bay told the monthly meeting of the St Ann Municipal Corporation (SAMC) that the Cemetery is a woodland and needs to be cleared of bushes and trees.
He said several months ago money was allocated for cleaning it but this was never done.
He said the cemetery – less than a mile from the Council building itself – was so deplorable that last Sunday he was there for a funeral and had to beg a videographer not to record proceedings that would reveal the condition of the place.
The St Ann’s Bay Cemetery has been officially closed for years, on the order of the Council, but burials continue to take place there with leading funeral homes being involved.
There was no response from the Chairman of the Council Sydney Stewart to Cllr Dickenson. The Councillor said he would not continue as chairman of the Finance Committee of the SAMC if by the next meeting, the cemetery was not bushed.
