Puerto Seco Beach, Discovery Bay was officially opened with high praise for its transformation and commendations to its owners and operators on their work.
Speaking at the official opening on Saturday, September 22, Kenneth ‘Kenny’ Benjamin, Executive Chairman of Guardsman Group said the development, on which some J$630 million has been spent, was one more of passion than of profit. He said the facility has been transformed into a world class beach and entertainment centre. “It has really ended up becoming a hotel and the only thing missing are the rooms.”
Mr Benjamin said that one of the most satisfying aspects of this development was that his company could provide employment for residents of the area.
Managing director of Guardsman Group Vinay Walia said some 80 people were employed and that there have been positive responses from the businesses in the community. He said even property values had increased.
Commendations on the project also came from Prime Minister Andrew Holness who was represented by Senator Ruel Reid, Education Minister.
Also speaking were: Minister of Industry Commerce Agriculture and Fisheries, Audley Shaw; Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Jennifer Griffith who represented Minister of Tourism Ed Bartlett; and Dr Wykeham McNeill, Opposition spokesman on Tourism. Also in attendance was Delroy Chuck, Minister of Justice and Dr Dayton Campbell, MP for the area.
Following the formal function in the front of the new facilities, people were able to see a transformed Puerto Seco with an improved beach, superior bathroom facilities, large pool, indoor restaurants and bar, a PADI Dive facility and a floating aqua park system. The management said they have contracts for hundreds of cruise visitors every week starting October.
Dozens of people, many from the tourism industry and other businesses, especially in St Ann were in attendance.
A lavish, varied menu was prepared at food stations set up around the pool and drinks were served from two large bars.
An entertainment package that had great variety stretched into the night with many guests speaking of the quality of the environs and the hospitality.
