Fire Burns Building in Pt Maria, Kills Chinese National

Investigations have started into how a Chinese national died in a fire Saturday, October 10, 2026, in Port Maria, St Mary.
Police have identified him as 24-year-old Li Kanghin of Stennett Street, Port Maria.

Kanghin lived and worked in the building at Stennett Street, which he and family members operated as Ling Fei Supermarket. He often manned a section where liquor and other items were stored.
Reports are that at about 10:40 a.m. Kaghin was at the establishment when employees heard an explosion and later saw flames coming from a section of the building. The fire spread quickly.
Fire personnel from the nearby Port Maria station responded quickly to contain and put out the blaze.
During cooling-down operations, Khangin’s body was found in the building.
A massive crowd of Saturday shoppers and residents from nearby Frontier, Paggee and other communities rushed to the scene. Police diverted traffic from Stennett Street.
Police and the Fire Service are carrying out investigations.
