CONCERN SATURDAY EVENING COULD BE ALL ABOUT POLITICS
Port Antonio Feb. 17, 2024
There is concern in Port Antonio Portland on Saturday, February 17, over what is potentially a political confrontation as two big events are set for the parish capital this evening.
Concerned sports administrators and businesses are blaming the police for allowing a Lighting Ceremony for Carder Park, the primary football venue in the parish to take place simultaneously with a political tour that climaxes with a spot meeting by the People’s National Party (PNP).
“How could the police allow that?” one sports administrator asked, speaking to the North Coast Times. “You can’t have those two big events simultaneously in Port Antonio because it’s straight campaigning.”
The Lighting of Carder Park – switching on of lights at the venue -was set some time ago. It’s expected that sometime after 6, the lights will be switched on — with Jamaica Labour Party politicians involved, in the first of a double header football match there.
At about the same time, the PNP led by Mark Golding will continue a scheduled tour of the parish that started around noon Saturday.
