79-y-o fined $10,000 for stealing electricity

An elderly man, who lived in a one-room house, pleaded guilty to the charge of abstracting electricity.

The man charged is 79-year-old Canute Bromfield.

Allegations are that on March 10, teams from the JPS and the police were on operation in an area of the parish, when they observed a blue wire attached to the JPS wire by a makeshift pole.

The wire was traced to a one-bedroom dwelling house of Bromfield.

The police later observed that a radio and one cell phone charger were connected to the illegal connection.

When Bromfield was cautioned, he gave no statement to the police.

When asked by presiding senior parish judge Yvette Wentworth-Miller the type of job he did, Bromfield explained that he did a “little farming.”

It was also later revealed that the elderly gentleman also resided alone at his premises.

Bromfield was fined $10,000 or 30 days imprisonment for the offence.
