CALL TO CLEAN UP SITE OF GARVEY’S STATUE
ST ANN’S BAY, ST ANN; Oct. 22, 2025
Seven people from St Ann were honoured as unsung heroes by the St Ann Municipal Corporation (SAMC) at a civic ceremony on Heroes Day, Monday, October 20, 2025.
The seven are: Clifford Cameron, Religion and Sports; Baron Simmonds, Religion; Myrtle Jones, Education and Religion; Fitzroy Pryce and Ainsleigh White, Entrepreneurship; Percival Gillings, Philanthropy and Community Service; and Lenroy Francis, Disaster Mitigation.

The event at St Ann Parish Library, Lawrence Park, St Ann’s Bay, was staged with the statue of National Hero Marcus Mosiah Garvey as a backdrop.

A citation was read to each of the honourees, who were then presented with a plaque recognizing their dedication and achievements in their various endeavours.
Floral tributes were laid to all seven National Heroes whose photos were displayed. The tributes came after the reading of a citation to each.

Custos of St Ann Joseph Issa, escorted by Senior Superintendent of Police Carlos Russell, inspected the guard of honour after a parade by uniformed groups. The Custos brought greetings and expressed his dissatisfaction with the state of Lawrence Park as the location for the Marcus Mosiah Garvey statute. He also said that not enough was being done to bring people out in large numbers to see their local heroes honoured.

Deputy Mayor Cardell Wickham did the welcome.
Greeting were also brought by MP for South East St Ann, Dr Kenneth Russell. An apology was tendered for MP for NE St Ann, Matthew Samuda.

Several councillors took part in the programme, reading citations, presenting plaques of honour or laying floral tributes.

Councillor Genevor Gordon Bailey, chair of the civic Committee of the SAMC, gave the vote of thanks.
