3RD VICTIM OF FATAL LLANDOVERY CRASH SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES BEFORE DEATH Was on her way to register for school

A young woman, who died from the fatal Llandovery crash between a bus and a car last month, was on her way to register for a nursing school.

Dead is Kayla Bennett-King, 17, of Philadelphia near Brown’s Town in St.Ann.

Bennett-King’s mother, Karen Morris, explained that Bennett-King was her first daughter.

“She was a very quiet person and very loving,” explained Ms Morris, who added that she was finding it very hard to cope.

It has already been reported that the crash claimed the lives of two women, Lenora Campbell, 54 and Marilyn Anderson Higgins, 46, both of Knapdale, near Brown’s Town, St Ann. The two have now been buried.

The crash, which occurred on Friday, August 12 involved a grey 2009 Toyota Corolla Axio motorcar and a Toyota Regius Ace minibus.

Bennett-King succumbed in the Intensive Care Unit at the University Hospital on Tuesday, September 6 from problems with her lungs.

Ms Morris explained that Kayla was speaking up to Sunday, August 14. She was later transferred from St Ann’s Bay Hospital to the University Hospital on August 15.

Ms Morris explained that in addition to two broken legs that her daughter suffered, she had a problem with her lungs. She said that doctors had told her that marrow from one of her bones had gone into her lungs. This caused breathing problems for Kayla as she could not breathe on her own. She was on a machine that helped with her breathing until the time of her death on September 6.

Ms Morris said that doctors said that a post-mortem was not done for Kayla as they already knew her difficulty.

Kayla Bennett-King is to be buried on Sunday, October 2. Ms Morris explained that Bennett-King’s father, brother and sisters have taken the death hard.

In the meantime, according to Sergeant Peter Bryan, of the St Ann Traffic police, he will be collecting the death certificate for Bennett-King in Kingston to ascertain her cause of death.

Meanwhile he explained that the male drivers have not been charged as investigations are still ongoing into the fatal crash.

The drivers of the minibus and the Toyota Corolla Axio motorcar gave statements to the police on Monday, August 15.

They have since been warned for prosecution.

The minibus and the Toyota Axio motorcar were licensed and insured.

Reports are that the minibus and the Toyota Axio motorcar were travelling from Runaway Bay, heading easterly towards Ocho Rios about 2:32 p.m. on Friday, August 12.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the minibus pulled out of the line of traffic and was overtaking, when the Axio motor, car which was ahead, also pulled out and a collision took place between the two.

The bus ended up on its top in a ditch and the car, which had one passenger, ended up in bushes off the highway. new-kayla-king
